Abstract:
This layer shows areas of Montana for which staff of the Montana Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) calculate a monthly Surface Water Supply Index (SWSI) value. The SWSI is determined for areas that rely on snow melt as the primary source of surface water. The regions were derived from 4th-code subbasin hydrologic unit boundary (HUC) data, modified based on input from NRCS personnel. Some SWSI areas are arbitrary-width, uniform buffers along streams, some are one or more HUCs, and some are truncated HUCs. Polygons in this layer whose NAME field is blank are not SWSI areas.

There are two versions of the layer. One version was used until the end of 1999. The SWSI areas were modified in 2000 and the pre-2000 SWSI maps on the State Library web site were replaced with maps showing the new areas. The 1992 version of the layer contains SWSI data values for February 1992 through February 1995.
